Medical acne treatments include:
a) Retinoids which are applied on the skin such as tretinoin and tazarotene as they decrease the numbers of comedones (black heads, white heads) as well as papules and pustules.
Retinoids taken by mouth such as isotretinoin are used for the treatment of severe acne.
b) Antibiotics such as erythromycin and clindamycin which are applied on the skin for their  anti-inflammatory properties and for their effects against the acne causing bacteria Propionibacterium acnes.
Antibiotics such as tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, erythromycin and azithromycin which are taken by mouth also have the above benefits.
c) Oral contraceptives such as Ortho Tri-Cyclen are used as adult acne treatment. They should however be avoided in smokers over 35 years old who have a history of migraines and blood clotting disorders.
